Georgia on our Mind

Tina writes " My dear husband has has Northern Georgia on his mind as a travel destination for 2 years. I figured my birthday was a perfect time to explore the Georgia mountains!! Our cabin near Helen, Georgia was beautifully decorated- definitely the nicest we have ever rented. It was built on pilings over a pond and our accommodations included a free frog concert every evening- Ribbitt...
We enjoyed all the beautiful waterfalls- especially Anna Ruby Falls, Amicacola Falls, and Tallulah Falls with its 1,000 ft. Gorge. The Georgia mountains reach up to 4,784 ft. and in the valleys pristine rivers are so delightful and contain some very large rainbow trout! We panned for gems at Crisson's Gold Mine and strolled through a 3 story home built in 1876 that now houses thousands of antiques and collectables . I bought at the Martin's House some very lovely hand crocheted table scarves. Dining on Lake Burton provided both scenic view and delicious cuisine while Unocoi Lodge was the spot for all you could eat trout buffet. We hiked in the location where the Appalachian Trail southern entry point is located and have many many more waterfalls, trails, train ride, horseback riding, and maybe some river tubing for our next Georgia mountains adventure..

Spring Break in Shenandoah

Tina writes " The drive to Luray, Virginia from the Richmond Airport was stunning - yellow forsythia, white and pink dogwoods, redbud trees, and green, green grass behind white wooden fences. What a feast for the eyes! After such a cool winter, especially for northern Virginia, the arrival of spring was a beautiful sight to behold.
On this trip we visited Luray Caverns, antiqued shopped in Strasburg, ate at the historic Mimmslyn Inn where Eleanor Roosevelt stayed, and hiked in the Shenandoah National Park. We especially enjoyed the mountain views on the the " Little Stoney Man" Trail and seeing the very tame deer along the park's roadside. The last couple of days my brother Bob drove to Gordonsville just outside of Charlottsville and we stayed in a yurt- a cross between a cabin and a tent at the Bluegreen property Shenandoah Crossing. Throughout our visit the temperatures were above normal-mid to high 80's - except in the higher elevations.A cold front at Gordonsville brought nighttime temps back in the 50's which is normal for April.
It was great visiting with my brother Bob and finally visiting the home of Thomas Jefferson- Monticello. Spring break passed too quickly but I felt reenergized and ready to begin our final 4th quarter of school!"

Tina writes " The long awaited spring break finally arrived! Thursday, April 1st was a teacher workday and the end of 3rd quarter. Two days later we headed out early for Miami- Gloria, Alexa, Paul Andrew and I had tickets for Disney on Ice! I have not seen a Disney Ice Show in 25 years and this was Paul Andrew's first! We had a wonderful time and both he and Alexa enjoyed the performance!
Later in the afternoon I baked cookies while my dear husband prepared his famous grilled vegetables and eventually the whole dinner! He is the better cook in the family....When Alexa and Paul Andrew got back from the Easter Egg hunt Alexa came rushing in the kitchen ready to decorate the Easter Egg and Easter Bunny shaped cookies. Katie also joined in and her artistic flair made for some really outstanding works of art!
On Easter morning we went to church and Paul Andrew slept on my lap during almost the entire mass. Both he and Alexa are like angels in church ...The weather was beautiful, hovering mostly in the high 70's-low 80's. Afterwards we enjoyed an Easter lunch (Yoyi prepared Gene's favorite -spiral ham). Arturo and Yoyi set up the bounce house for Alexa and Paul Andrew and this gave Artu and Eddy a great workout hoasting up and over those tireless youngsters... It was wonderful getting together over the Easter holiday and spending time together
but we had to get home before dark- time to finish the last bit of packing. Monday morning we had a flight to Virginia and the Skyline Drive!"

Tina writes " Woke up at 6:45am to feed kitties and checked the temperature outdoors- 38 degrees! Yes, this has been a different winter in Florida. In all my travels in the last five years I have sought cool locations with scenic mountainous terrains. This winter Florida has definitely provided the cool- in fact this past week every state except Hawaii had snow on the ground!
In the afternoon Stephanie and her sister Jessie came over to visit and brought us gifts- a matched pair of Valentine glasses and a lovely Valentine Day card. Tootsie and Simba quickly ran to their kitty sitters and were ready for lots of playing.... After their visit I prepared a roasted turkey breast with all the fixings. I ate very little stuffing- I have been somewhat folllowing the Paleo Diet which does not allow bread - but once in awhile....I have been back on my exercise routine since the school district began free classes at a nearby school. Pool at home too cool for water aerobics.
In the evening we headed over to the Three Oaks Banquet Center for some dancing- the only thing I wanted for Valentine's Day. We danced for two hours-plenty of slow dancing for snuggling between the lively musical selections. It was so love-a lee ......

A Cold Snap to Remember!

Tina writes " It was as bad as predicted- the Gulf of Mexico temperature dropped to 48 degrees and the temperatures last Monday and Tuesday morning reached 29 degrees! I wore my winter coat to school for a full week and my winter gloves. The windows in my classroom leaked air so badly that the temperature was 50 degrees by the windows in my classrom.....
It finally made the low 70's yesterday so the Big Chill of January 2010 is now a memory. The snook in our normally warm waters and tropical fish farms in Tampa and South Florida took a major hit but this is the way of nature. Nature's plan works in the long duration but seems often cruel in the moment.... At least those chubby manatees set their GPS for the warm waters of Florida Power and Light and made it through this ordeal! Though in some ways this is not the best maneuver for these gentle mammals. After several nights in the garage our orchids are back out in the lanai. We are not placing them out in the yard just in case OLD MAN WINTER decides to pay another long visit!"
