Family News When we traveled to North Carolina with Paul and Dan back in June 1999 we said we would not wait another 9 years for our next visit. Somehow we did not make it back until 14 years later! We arrived by plane to Norfolk, Va. on May 28th and spent the first part of our visit with my brother Bob. He drove us around and I got the chance to visit some of my childhood and teenage years stomping grounds. My Catholic School, Christ the King, had new additions but most of the school was as I remembered. Ocean View Beach where my girlfriends and I hung out was all updated with the removal of all the old beach properties. In the evening my brother Bob took us to some delicious seafood restaurants and obeyed my rule of no cooking on this visit!
We rented a Ford Taurus and headed south to the Outer Banks. We first visited Hatteras Island and enjoyed talking to John Couch. I worked at his family's gas station and tackle shop in the summer of 1973 before starting my freshmen year at Virginia Tech. That summer I was already deeply in love with my husband of now 39 years. We had first met in June of 1972 at the Cape Point Campground where the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is located. Memories, memories..... The next day we then drove north back up to Kill Devil Hills where we stayed on the Atlantic Ocean beachfront. During our 3 day stay we visited Roanoke Island- both Wanchese where we lived for 13 years- and Manteo where we both taught at Manteo High School. On Roanoke Island we enjoyed visits to the Ft Raleigh National Historic Site where I worked several years and the Roanoke Island Aquarium where I volunteered. Of course I had to visit Wright Brothers National Memorial where I gave countless flight room presentations . It was great seeing Darrell Collins who started working at Wright brothers in the late 70's as well!
Highlights of our visit where spending time with my brother Bob at Virginia Beach and seeing our friends, coworkers. and past students. John Couch of Buxton, George and Elena Gundaker of Wanchese, Bett and Jim Beasley of Manns Harbor and all of Gene's students that joined us for dinner we truly feel blessed for all the fond memories we shared during our years on the Outer Banks of North Carolina as well as the new memories from this visit.....
